Wanna Smile More? Adopt a DOG.
Thinking about bringing a dog into your life? It’s a big decision, no doubt about it. Adopting a furry friend is a commitment that should be made with care and a long-term vision. You have to be willing to put in the time to train, to provide cleanliness and care, to offer the best quality nutrition and wellness. You must have love and good intentions in your heart. And you absolutely must be patient! But if you’re ready to open your heart and your home, the rewards might just exceed your expectations.
Dogs are more than loyal companions—they're proven mood-boosters and stress-relievers. A well-matched dog is like a family member, a best friend, and a soul mate all in one! Research has shown that dogs can reduce anxiety and depression, help ease loneliness, and encourage physical activity.
They're like little wellness coaches wrapped in fur.
Having a dog in your household has even been scientifically proven to improve physical health. Studies indicate that dog owners often have lower blood pressure and reduced risks of heart disease compared to those without pets (Smith et al., 2021) 1-. Just spending time with a dog doing what they love best playing, cuddling, and even taking walks—can stimulate the natural release of oxytocin 2- and dopamine 3-, the brain's feel-good chemicals. These cherished moments of bonding create joy for both the person and their pup.
Beyond the health benefits, adopting a dog is a profound act of love that can change a life. Not only will you gain a new best friend, but you'll also give a deserving animal a second chance at a better life of lasting happiness.
Shelters are filled with dogs of all ages, sizes, and breeds waiting to brighten someone's life. Unfortunately, not everyone who makes the commitment to bring home a dog is as serious about it as they should be. Choose carefully. (In our next post, we will talk more about matching the right dog to the right human(s). It is so important to go and meet the dog and interact with them. The connection you build will be unique, heartwarming, and lifelong.
So, if you’re considering adopting, do your homework, prepare your home, be kind and be patient, and when you're ready, open your heart to the experience. A loyal, canine friend could be waiting to brighten your days with a new found energy, unconditional love, and memorable joyful moments.
